27 March 1925, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, d. 13 June 2003, New York City, New York, USA. After taking up the tenor saxophone as a child, Ashby played in territory bands in the Midwest, making his recording debut with vocalist Walter Brown in 1949. In the early 50s he settled in Chicago, playing in various bands, often in an R&B or strongly blues-based style, including a stint with Chuck Berry.
