When David Byron left Rough Diamond in 1977, the remaining band members recruited US vocalist Garry Bell as replacement and changed their name to Champion. With former Humble Pie guitarist Dave Clempson (5 September 1949, Tamworth, Staffordshire, England), ex-Wings drummer Geoff Britton, plus Damon Butcher (keyboards) and Willy Bath (bass) completing the line-up, Champions music never lived up to the promise suggested by their impressive pedigree. Picked up by Epic Records, they released a self-titled album in 1978 of blues-based rock. Failing to attract media attention, they disbanded shortly after the record was released.
