The core members of this experimental US collective are Nabob (Nathan D. Shineywater, Montevallo, Alabama, USA; guitar/vocals) and Rabob (b. Rachael Hughes, Montevallo, Alabama, USA; keyboards/vocals). The laidback Alabama-raised duo began in 2001 as rainYwood, before changing their name to Brightblack, finally settling on Brightblack Morning Light prior to their signing to Matador Records in 2005. Their music, an intoxicating mix of Native American folk and southern stoner rock, incorporates splashes of Rabob’s Rhodes keyboards and Nabob’s breathy vocals that bear a passing resemblance to those of Jason Pierce from Spiritualized. Their assumed stage names were the legacy of the Native American culture that informed their upbringing. This bohemian lifestyle continued when the band relocated to Northern Californian tepees and log cabins.
