10 February 1898, Augsburg, Bavaria, d. 14 August 1956, Berlin, Germany. A controversial playwright, poet and lyricist, Brecht was educated at Munich University and had established himself as a writer by the early 20s. He toured the music halls and cabarets in Germany and Scandinavia during the rest of the decade, singing and playing his own songs.
