An R&B duo from San Francisco, California, USA, comprising Martha Wash (USA) and Izora Rhodes Armstead (b. 1942, Texas, USA, d. 16 September 2004, California, USA). Two Tons O’ Fun started out as protégées of the gay disco singer Sylvester, beginning their career singing as the background chorus, their name a reference to the substantial girth of each singer. They recorded their first two albums under the production aegis of Sylvester’s producer, Harvey Fuqua, who released them on his own Honey label. In 1982 the Two Tons O’ Fun moved to CBS Records and changed their name to the Weather Girls. At Columbia they had a successful single with ‘It’s Raining Men’. It only scraped into the Top 50 in the USA but proved to be a huge hit in the UK, going to number 2 on the chart in early 1984. The Weather Girls left Columbia in 1985, and Wash eventually signed with RCA Records as a solo artist.
