Decades: 2000s

Olivia Longe, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. This urban R&B singer is chiefly noted as the first artist to be signed to Clive Davis’ new venture, J Records. Olivia moved to New York City at the age of seven and was raised in the Queens district. Like many a singer before her, she grew up singing in her local church choir. She put her college education on hold to sign to industry veteran Davis’ newly-formed J label in August 2000. Olivia’s debut was premiered by the sassy hit single ‘Bizounce’, which climbed into the US Top 20 the following May. The rest of the album conformed to the contemporary urban blueprint, equal parts sweet diva (‘Lower To My Heart’, ‘It’s On Again’) and street tough (‘Whoadie’, ‘Bring Da Roof Down’).
