Benjamin Scott Ferree, 1974, Silver Springs, Maryland, USA. There was a flurry of interest in this Maryland-raised purveyor of jaunty alternative folk when, in late 2006, his debut EP on Laris Kreslin’s Box Theory Records was expanded into the album Leaving The Nest for the UK’s Domino Records.

Ferree’s Baptist elementary-junior high schooling took place in the same church that he and his parents regularly attended for gospel meetings. It was on progressing to Eleanor Roosevelt High in Greenbelt, Maryland that he began to realise his acting abilities and immersed himself in the works of Sam Shepherd and Tennessee Williams. At this time Ferree’s eclectic music tastes ranged from the go-go sound of Rare Essence and Chuck Brown to Brendan Canty’s embryonic emo and post-hardcore projects, Rites Of Spring and Fugazi.
