Dilated Peoples Biography

Originally formed in Los Angeles, California, USA, during 1992, this hip-hop crew comprises DJ Babu and MCs Evidence and Rakaa aka Iriscience. The two MCs first met through freestyle sessions at the Hip Hop Shop. They eventually united with turntablist DJ Babu, a former member of the remix/dance act the Beat Junkies, appearing on their 1997 debut, World Famous Beat Junkies: Vol. 1. Signing on with the record label ABB, Dilated Peoples issued several singles and EPs during the late 90s, including Third Degree (which included rapping by Defari), Work The Angles, and Rework The Angles (which featured spots by artists such as A.G., Defari and Xzibit).

The buzz surrounding Dilated Peoples grew too loud for the major labels to ignore any longer, as the trio signed with Capitol Records. Dilated Peoples’ major label full-length debut, The Platform, was released in May 2000, while their second album, Expansion Team, was issued little more than a year later. The latter featured acclaimed rap producers such as DJ Premier, ?uestlove (the Roots), JuJu (the Beatnuts), Da Beatminerz and the Alchemist. The latter worked on the excellent hit single ‘Worst Come To Worst’, a hypnotic track built around samples of William Bell and Mobb Deep. The belated follow-up, Neighborhood Watch, was released to less than adulatory reviews in 2004, with the Alchemist’s production work in particular not up to the standard set by the crew’s earlier records. In addition to his Dilated Peoples duties, DJ Babu has issued solo recordings, including 1997’s Wild Stylus and 2002’s Duck Season.
