Rating: 4/5 --
If this Ghibli creation is smaller in scale than many of the company's films, it certainly doesn't lack for heart or soul. I was swept away in it.

A gently lyrical diversion for Ghibli die-hards ... a gentle snooze for others.

Its visual magic lies in painterly compositions of foliage, clouds, architecture and water, and its emotional impact comes from the way everyday life is washed in the colors of memory.

It’s all lovely and sweet....Miyazaki’s animation does clear away the extraneous detail, re-creating the world of 50 years ago and instilling it with the poignancy of a family snapshot. -- Grade: B+

It's a sweet, simple movie about likable people growing up and figuring out who they are.

Accompanied by a joyous, honky-tonk score from Satoshi Takebe and earnestly voiced by its leads, this is a perfectly rendered world that quietly throbs with sadness and thrums with modern progress.

[A] film about many things...The movie looks lovely...it's luminous prose.

Product Description:
Set in Tokyo a few months before the 1964 Olympic Games, FROM UP ON POPPY HILL tells the story of Umi, a teenager whose father died during wartime, and who shoulders much of the responsibility for her family's business in addition to maintaining good grades at school. Her orphaned friend Shun lives in a mansion on the school grounds with dozens of other kids, and when their home is threatened with demolition, Umi and the others do their best to stop the dwelling from being destroyed. FROM UP ON POPPY HILL is the second feature by Goro Miyazaki, the son of acclaimed animator Hayao Miyazaki. The film played at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
