For decades the words "best of" have been carelessly tossed around as a utility heading for any sort of grab bag collection, a practice that has rendered the phrase suspect and even meaningless. Legacy's second Best of the Bird album certainly contains enough good jazz to warrant copping a listen, even if these cannot justifiably be considered Parker's greatest moments on record. Opening with a big chunk of a radio broadcast from Birdland that took place in May 1950 with Fats Navarro, Bud Powell, Curly Russell and Art Blakey in the band, this sampler tosses in the obligatory handful of Dial sides from 1947 and closes with three numbers performed at the Rockland Palace in September 1952. Probably not the "best of" Bird but it's certainly a nice introductory taste that will also please those who can never have enough of Charlie Parker. ~ arwulf arwulf
