Christian indie rockers As Cities Burn have found ways of creating drama out of daily life without resorting to volume or histrionics. Songwriter Cody Bonnette's introspective lyrics and gentle vocals work well with a variety of instrumental approaches. Opener "'84 Sheepdog" is surprisingly tense, with a bassline pulse providing the tracks for synths and guitar to rumble down, while "Pirate Blues" shudders with big choruses and a rhythm that imitates the roll of the high seas. But it's on soft, near-acoustic songs like "Daughter" that the emotional depth of the band's music really shines.
