For reasons unbeknownst to him, Leonard Markham - a young inexperienced engineer - is hastily sent to Berlin during the apex of the Cold War. His superior officer, Captain Lofting, whose compliance with U.S. forces is highly suspicious, quickly hands Markham over to CIA officer Bob Glass. A composed man of great restraint, Glass uses Markham as a sounding board for his personal obsessions, and cautions him to watch for spies. When Markham falls in love with Maria, an enigmatic and beautiful young woman, Glass tells Markham to beware of her. But Markham continues to see Maria despite Bob's warning. Will Markham's relationship with Maria jeopardize his safety and the completion of the assignment'
