Product Description:

FOR PENCE AND SPICY ALE contains songs from a 1975 LP and material recorded by individual band members in 1977.
Recorded in March 1975 & January 1977. Includes liner notes by A.L. Lloyd and Tony Engle.
For hardcore British-folk fans, the Watersons were the Beatles of the U.K. folk revival of the 1960s, standing head and shoulders above their peers and influencing legions of followers. FOR PENCE AND SPICY ALE (1975) was the first album by a revitalized and reconfigured version of the group, with Norma Waterson's husband, Martin Carthy, replacing her cousin, John Harrison. On a batch of traditional folk songs, the group's four-part a cappella harmonies are like moving sculptures, the voices weaving through and around each other in striking formulations. FOR PENCE AND SPICY ALE signaled a new beginning for the Watersons and reiterated their status as folk standard-bearers.
