First up is the comedy WHEN THE CLOUDS ROLL BY, directed by GONE WITH THE WIND's Victor Fleming - with Fairbanks as a freewheeling young bachelor bamboozled by a nutty psychiatrist. Next on the bill is the 1917 THE AMERICANO, with Fairbanks as a mining engineer who falls hard for the daughter of a deposed South American leader. Finally, the same year's WILD AND WOOLLY stars Fairbanks as the naïve son of Eastern bluebloods, who idolizes the Old West and inadvertently winds up in a real-life hold-up scenario and tries to use clichéd tricks from western novels to save the day.

I saw "Wild and Wooly" at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia around 1964-5 and it was this film that pulled me into watching the silents. "Wild and Wooly" suffers from a hazy transfer, but it is watchable and still funny. Facial expressions are sometimes lost and these are important to silent comedy. This movie is available in a far more expensive set however and so it depends upon the buyers needs and pocket-book. "When the Clounds Roll By has a better transfer which is good. One can still perceive the power of Douglas Fairbanks and how he became such a great star.
