Product Description:

The moving true story of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in Great Britain. The last man executed in that country was later found to be innocent, a regrettable (to say the least) incident which led to the abandonment there of the practice.

Plot Synopsis:

In the repressed atmosphere of 1950s Britain, Marilyn Monroe-lookalike Ruth Ellis is the ultimate bad girl. A divorced, former prostitute, Ellis now works as a hostess in a nightclub where she meets dissolute rich boy David Blakeley. Handsome, insouciant and cruel, Blakeley is a representative of the haute-bourgeois world Ellis longs to enter. Consumed with desire for a man and a social standing she can never possess, Ellis' obsessive relationship with Blakeley spirals ever deeper into despair and violence.

Production Notes:

  • Screen debut for British actress Miranda Richardson.
  • Co-produced by First Picture Company.

Rating 3.0 She does't know how to pick 'em! Movie Lover: from Ayer, MA US -- October, 1, 2009

Miranda Richardson explodes on the screen with looks and attitude to deliver a strong performance as the low life commoner obsessed with an upper class egoist. Ian Holm is excellent as the good guy who is always there for her, although he mostly hits the same note throughout. This DVD would have been much better if English subtitles were available. The accents can be difficult for an American ear to fathom. It's entertaining and, at times, riveting. But, the pattern of the relationship is a bit static and that keeps this film from getting to the next level.
