A significant yet often overlooked player in an early-1970s British pop resurgence that also included Marc Bolan, Slade, Gary Glitter, and Cockney Rebel, David Essex was a then-unique combination of successful actor and pop star. His youthful good looks made him an obvious teen idol, but he also produced some consistently high-quality hits, many of which are collected on this best-of. Essex was equally adept at performing bouncy, all-ages singalongs like "Hold Me Close," hip, self-referential bubblegum like "Gonna Make You a Star," and brooding, opaque numbers like "Rock On," while his sound and image conjured both Tin Pan Alley and the new breed of David Bowie-esque androgynous rock musician.
