"[T]he Avett Brothers scale down to an acoustic duo....Scott and Seth Avett deliver a half dozen sparsely produced, but heartfelt tunes."
In 2006, North Carolina alt-country act the Avett Brothers released an EP called THE GLEAM featuring a considerably more stripped-down feel than their earlier records had. Recorded simply and quickly by Seth and Scott Avett (without bassist Bob Crawford, the third member of the band's official lineup), THE GLEAM felt closer to vintage country duos like the Louvin Brothers than to the sometimes manic punk-infused spirit of albums like A CAROLINA JUBILEE. Two years later, THE SECOND GLEAM is another EP's worth of stark acoustic tunes, and is even packaged in a similarly plain sleeve. Featuring little more than the brothers' plaintive close harmonies, acoustic guitar, and banjo, ballads such as "Murder in the City" and "Tear Down the House" have the plainspoken grace of traditional country favorites. THE SECOND GLEAM is available as a digital download, a standard CD, and a vinyl LP.
