Guitarist/vocalist/ad-libber Marty Grosz's best-known group is the Orphan Newsboys, a quartet with trumpeter Peter Ecklund, clarinetist Bobby Gordon and bassist Greg Cohen. On this particular CD, recorded at the 1995 Atlanta Jazz Party, Grosz heads his "Sugar Daddies," a septet with Ecklund, Gordon, trombonist Bob Havens, pianist Keith Ingham, bassist Frank Tate and drummer Wayne Jones. 13 classic tunes from the 1920s and '30s are swung, with the occasional standard (such as "Bugle Call Rag" and "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate") joined by such rarely performed songs as "Strut Miss Lizzie," "Sobbin' Blues" (which has some fine whistling from Ecklund), "Little Girl" and a hot version of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." The ensembles are heated but uncrowded, the solos are concise and meaningful, and Grosz's occasional vocals are always fun. This very likable set is highly recommended to fans of pre-bop jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
