During most of his last 30 years, pianist Teddy Wilson was usually featured leading trios. In that setting, Wilson tended to sound very comfortable and predictable. This CD has Wilson in a couple more inspired outings, both recorded in England. The first three numbers are played in a quartet with clarinetist Randy Colville, while the other six songs are with a quintet featuring clarinetist Dave Shepherd and vibraphonist Ronnie Gleaves. The songs are all familiar standards that Wilson had been playing since the late '30s, but the two clarinetists keep the sparks flying and push Wilson a bit. The uptempo pieces in particular are exciting, making this set well worth picking up by swing collectors and Teddy Wilson fans. ~ Scott Yanow
