Only slightly more restrained than his more famous pop output, Serge Gainsbourg's Musiques de Films 1959-1990 chronicles his work as a composer of the scores for such films as 1960's L'Eau … la Bouche and 1963's Strip-Tease and Comment Trouvez-Vous Ma Soeur?, right up to his penultimate score for 1990's Stan the Flasher. It's too bad that none of his music for Elisa, for which he won a posthumous 1995 Cesar Award for best score, was included, but otherwise this three-disc set is far from skimpy. As with his pop work, Gainsbourg was a versatile yet distinctively flamboyant score composer, moving from the jazzy music of L'Eau … la Bouche to the sexy, exotica-tinged score for Strip-Tease, which features a breathy theme song sung by Juliette Greco. Several of Gainsbourg's muses turn up on this collection, including Anna Karina, who performs a lush "Sous les Soleil Exactement" from Anna; Nico, whose sweet "Strip-Tease [In‚dit]" is a far cry from her better-known work with the Velvet Underground and her solo career; Fran‡oise Hardy, whose "L'Amour en Priv‚" comes from 1973's Projection Privee; and of course Jane Birkin, who appears on Madame Claude's "Yesterday Yes a Day" and Slogan's "La Chanson de Slogan," a 1969 duet with Gainsbourg that the underground rock group Blonde Redhead covered to great effect nearly a quarter-century later. Gainsbourg himself is at his louche best on tracks like "L'Eau … la Bouche," "Sex-Shop," and "Elisa," which sounds like it was plucked straight out of a French music hall. The instrumental tracks on the collection are even more diverse, spanning lounge, jazz, French pop, orchestral pieces, funk, disco, and rock. This is an overwhelming collection and maybe too much for anyone besides die-hard Gainsbourg and film score fans, but Musiques de Films 1959-1990 reaffirms that even if the movies that he scored didn't always have the most artistic value, his music for them usually did. ~ Heather Phares
