By their fifth album in 1971, British heavy rock outfit Status Quo had honed their sound to a simple but powerful formula of thundering riffs, compelling blues-rock melodies, and the occasional touch of pastoral wistfulness, evidenced in the recurring acoustic picker "Nanana" that appears three times almost as a palate-cleanser between the heavier numbers. Although they boasted neither a Page nor a Plant, the band could rock on their respective instruments, and the complex "Someone's Learning" indicates a facility for proto-metal songcraft.
