THE EINSTEIN OF SEX is maverick German director Rosa von Praunheim's attempt to illuminate the life and work of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, a gay German Jew living in 19th-century Berlin. Hirschfeld's realization of his homosexuality in his teen years leads to his research on the matter, which results in his establishment of the first gay political group and the first medical practice for gays, the Institute of Sexual Science, which is destroyed by the Nazis along with most of his life's work. Von Praunheim's film celebrates this important figure in gay history with great detail, humor, and respect.
