Rolling Stone - 6/30/94, p.75
3.5 stars - Good Plus - "...Van Zandt has always been his own best interpreter....possibly the only white singer who can perform rangy country blues like [Lightnin'] Hopkins' without a hint of artifice; Van Zandt's blues are...casually authentic..."

The last live album issued during Van Zandt's lifetime, ROAD SONGS was recorded at various venues over several unspecified years, but draws from the same latter-day period as REAR VIEW MIRROR (basically late-'80s/mid-'90s), as guitarist Owen Cody is featured on both albums. Usually, other artists trip over themselves to record version of Van Zandt's classic tunes, but the unique ROAD SONGS features Townes' live versions of songs by others. His choice of covers and brief but informative liner notes say a lot about Van Zandt's influences and compositional mindset. On the old school/traditional side there are tunes by Lightnin' Hopkins (a key influence, as attested to by the presence of three Hopkins tunes here), A.P. Carter and Peter La Farge. More contemporary artists like Dylan (the obscure, quirky "Man Gave Names to All the Animals"),Bruce Springsteen and Joe Ely. ROAD SONGS is an unusual but enlightening entry in the Van Zandt canon.
