About the film, Timothy Dalton wrote in an online chat, "I am personally a believer in or at least I have a personal faith in the fact that there is a great deal presently unknown that will one day be open to explanation. I do not believe in the Devil. Since researching this event and playing in this movie it certainly became clear to me that the rite of exorcism is in fact a forceful and sometimes brutal form of psychotherapy."
Piper Laurie starred as the mother in the horror classic CARRIE, as well as in the not-quite-as-successful RUBY.
The film begins with the following line: "The following is based on the true story of the only documented Exorcism performed by the Catholic Church in modern-day America."
The film was based on Thomas B. Allen's book as well as Father Bowdern's secret diary and the eyewitness accounts of Father Walter Halloran.
Steve Edwards contributed additional music and lyrics to the soundtrack.
