French iconoclast Serge Gainsbourg stars as a lauded director of commercials in this black satire. Leaving his pregnant wife behind, he heads to Venice for an awards ceremony and begins an affair with a British damsel (Jane Birkin, who Gainsbourg romanced in real life). Like the advertising world itself, reality and fantasy mesh and often become indistinguishable in this time capsule from the Swinging '60s that includes some great Richard Lester-ish ad parodies.
