Performers, Cast and Crew:
Julie Anderson, who is the granddaughter of former U.S. Senator Barry M. Goldwater, directs this HBO feature on the life of a man who sharply divided the country. Goldwater ran for president in 1964 after making his name first as a businessman and then as a senator. Although he never made it to the Oval Office, and Goldwater's conservative values may have been ahead of their time, his supporters were delighted when Ronald Reagan took many of Goldwater's beliefs and turned them into a successful run for the presidency. To tell this fascinating tale, Anderson's film draws on rare archival material, including home movies and interview footage with a broad range of influential figures.
Description by Zeitgeist Films Ltd.:
Barry Goldwater was the kind of conservative that we have almost forgotten about today—fiscally responsible, hawkish on foreign policy but libertarian on social and moral issues. His five-term senate career included a run for president in 1964 against Lyndon B. Johnson that was both exciting and tumultuous.
MR. CONSERVATIVE, this fascinating portrait of this powerful man by his granddaughter, shows Goldwater's enduring legacies on the American political system—as well as the ways that the Republican party has shifted to a more evangelical, spendthrifty style of governing. With John McCain, Hillary Clinton, James Carville, Al Franken, Sandra Day O'Connor, Walter Cronkite, Senator Edward Kennedy, Andy Rooney, and never-before-seen home movies and photos, this is an unmissable title for the election season.
