Boy, is it hard to keep track of all the jillions of Iggy Pop live albums that have appeared over the years. At last count, the only official live set to be issued with the authority of Mr. Pop was 1978's TV Eye (1977 Live), which is pretty mind-boggling when you think of all the live sets that have seen the light of day. It's gotten so out of hand that now certain unofficial live releases are being reissued under different titles and with altered track listings, as evidenced by the Iggy Pop edition of the Extended Versions series. Nearly all of the tracks are plucked from the previously issued Live at the Ritz NYC (1986), a show taped while Pop was supporting his Blah Blah Blah release. After spending the early part of the decade almost "sleepwalking" through shows due to his relapse back into substance abuse, Pop launched his first proper tour in a few years by this point. Backed by a worthy backing band, Pop hands in quite a few stirring renditions of classics. With a few exceptions (the Stooges' "No Fun" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog"), the majority of the disc focuses on solo-era Pop, mixing such older tunes as "Lust for Life," "Some Weird Sin," and "China Girl" with then-current tracks -- "Real Wild Child," "Blah Blah Blah," etc. You can't argue with the CD's budget price, just that there are far more attractive live Pop releases out there. And for a few extra dollars, wouldn't you want the complete show? ~ Greg Prato
