Living Blues - 1-2/99, pp.55-6
"...Thoroughly fresh and exciting, the CD reminds us of what was so great about [Johnson's] early work and leaves us anticipating even more from him..."
Though Syl Johnson is best known for his great soul records of the '60s and '70s, the '90s found him reacquainted with his first love, the blues. Johnson worked as a guitarist for Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, and Junior Wells in the late '50s. A return to his hometown of Chicago connected him with the Windy City's very active blues scene and with the Delmark label, for whom he recorded BACK IN THE GAME and TALKIN' BOUT CHICAGO.
On BRIDGE TO A LEGACY, Johnson plays guitar and harmonica, sings in his characteristically soulful voice, and co-wrote all but one of the album's ten songs. Guests Jonny Lang and Syl's daughter Syleena. Lang lights up "I Been Missin' U" with his blistering guitar and duets with Johnson on the vocal. Syleena sings the ballad "Half a Love" with passion and commitment. BRIDGE… is a satisfying look at the blues side of Johnson's music. For some of his classic soul material, check out TWILIGHT & TWINIGHT or any of the Hi Records compilations.
