After leaving the Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn enjoyed a robust solo career, as evidenced by this 2005 best-of, which includes 16 of his strongest solo songs, as well as a bonus disc of stripped-down keyboard-and-vocal tracks. The highlights here reflect the range of influences that inform his work, including the farfisa-laden, garage-y menace of "Death Valley Rain," the wistful minimalism of "Conspiracy of the Heart," and the pounding glam-rocker "500 Girl Mornings." The bonus material is haunting and spare, and lays bare the directness of Wynn's literate lyrics.
