"...RUNAWAY TRAIN is a sensational picture. Wrenchingly intense and brutally powerful..."

Product Description:

Two convicts in an Alaskan prison escape their inhumane jailers, trek across the icy Northeast wilderness, and board a speeding freight train. Unfortunately, the train's conductor dies suddenly of a heart attack, and the convicts face certain death unless they can find some way to stop it. Based on a screenplay by none other than Akira Kurosawa. Academy Award Nominations: 3, including Best Actor--Jon Voight.

Plot Synopsis:

An existential action thriller about two escaped convicts -- Manny, a hardened lifer, and Buck, a petty criminal -- who jump a four-engine work train, hoping to ride it to freedom. When the engineer is killed, the convicts find themselves aboard a runaway train hurtling through the frozen Alaskan wilderness. Pursued by a brutal prison warden who will stop at nothing until they're caught, Manny and Buck, with the help of female railroad worker, struggle to bring the train under control before it crashes.

Production Notes:

  • Dedicated to the memory of Rick Holley, a helicopter pilot on the crew who was killed during production.
  • Filmed in Alaska and Montana, USA, color by Rank. The historic Old Montana Territorial prison, built in 1870 and located in Deer Lodge, Montana, was used as one of the locations.

The great Japanese director Akira Kurosawa wrote the original screenplay which was later adapted for American audiences. Francis Ford Coppola and Tom Luddy of American Zoetrope suggested Andrei Konchalovsky, who was fresh from his native Russia, as a possible director. Konchalovsky met with Kurosawa in Japan and "Runaway Train" was born.
  • Konchalovsky's other directing credits include the 1979 epic "Siberiade" and "Maria's Lovers" (his American feature film directorial debut). Konchalovsky's was also a co-writer on Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev."
