Although she was adored by her pop audience for breezy material such as "Come On-a My House," Rosemary Clooney was in fact a fine jazz singer at heart (like Kay Starr), and excelled in many different settings. Ballads were one of those settings, and this collection from Collectables spends its brief running time focused squarely on that talent. Comprising recordings from the late '40s and early '50s, Clooney's performances are touching and sublime, despite a raft of forgettable arrangements from Mitch Miller and Percy Faith, among others. Two exceptions to the bland charts on display are "Blame It on My Youth" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," both with accompaniment from Paul Weston. ~ John Bush
