The Swing era was over, but some big bands hung on. Chalk it up to popularity and/or changing with the times, but Lionel Hampton's band endured. Recorded live (originally for radio broadcast) in Switzerland in 1953, the Hampton band was in a wonderful transitional period. While they played hard-swinging, danceable favorites of the Swing era, their repertoire reflected the burgeoning influences of bebop and even rhythm & blues. This band wails throughout, featuring jazz stars-to-be, trumpeters Art Farmer and Clifford Brown, and a lad named Quincy Jones. This is a gem for both big-band fans and jazz historians.
