The songs here are oldies, the Mills Brothers are no spring chickens themselves, and the style of these performances, recorded in the 1940s and '50s, smacks of a bygone day, but there's something eternally youthful about the Mills's vocals. All four brothers possess striking voices and an impeccable sense of timing.
The ebullience of "Glow Worm" lifts the pop song from its time period and transforms it into something eternal. "Lazy River" does the same, starting out sedate and relaxed, and building with a rhythmic gait and swinging zeal. "You Always Hurt the One You Love," like all the group's best efforts, finds their sense of rhythm further enhanced by their knowing way with lyrics and musical phrasing. This sense of intimacy with their material is what gives the songs something else that's ageless--romance.
