Product Description:

In THE GARDEN OF ALLAH, Domini, a society girl (Marlene Dietrich) mourning the death of her father, travels to the Sahara. There she finds romance with Boris, a monk (Charles Boyer) who has recently abandoned the monastic life but remains torn between religious devotion and worldly desire, particularly desire for the exceptionally alluring Domini. Dietrich was photographed so beautifully that the cameramen won special Oscars for this early Technicolor film.

Production Notes:

  • David O. Selznick's first color production, "Garden of Allah" won a special Oscar for it's use of early Technicolor.

Overly melodramtic emoting Movie Lover: from Middle Village, NY US -- May, 24, 2010

I see other reviewers praising this as a work of art. I'm sorry, all I saw was a Charles Boyer and Marlene Dietrich just this side of bad acting. Ok, I'll grant you this - she was beautiful!

The Garden of Allah - still amazing Movie Lover: from Portland, OR US -- September, 10, 2009

(Corrected - I caught some errors in my original review) I watched this "golden oldie" on my HD monitor. The quality of the rendering on the DVD was excellent! Really, it's a classic work of art. I gave it only 4 stars simply because it's so dated as a film story. By that, I mean to say that I couldn't relate to the time period well, and so I became less interested in the story. Notwithstanding my cultural ignorance of the 1930s (this film was first released in 1934), I was very impressed with the quality of the film as rendered in HD DVD format. If you are into "golden oldie" films, this is well worth the price of admission at your home theatre! Enjoy! (Oh, and it arrived in mint condition as well!)
