With a series of albums on Blue Note, Joe Lovano has proven his mettle as a modern tenor saxophonist in a dazzling variety of contexts. STREAMS OF EXPRESSION finds him both paying tribute to and reinventing the iconic Miles Davis album BIRTH OF THE COOL. With a large group (and the assistance of legendary conductor/arranger Gunter Schuller), Lovano achieves an exhilarating balance of intricate arrangements and vivid improvisation. STREAMS is loaded with dexterous, swinging ensemble passages and bright, concise soloing--special nods go to Lovano (featured on clarinet as well as tenor), Gary Smulyan, and John Hicks (who passed away not long after these sessions).
