"...A gritty, gut-wrenching account of rural America....[Shephard] gives a quietly effective portrayal..."
A family of farmers struggle to retain possession of their property during a difficult financial crisis. They are suddenly faced with the prospect of losing their land to the insensitive rules of a government bureaucracy more concerned with paperwork than people.
Description by Buena Vista Home Entertainment:
Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard are Jewell and Gil Ivy. They work the land in America's heartland, on a farm that has bound their family together for generations. For Jewell and Gil, the land has always been their life. So when the government bureaucrats decide to take it all away, there¿s only one decision the family can make ... the Ivys are staying.
At one time, banks and government agencies encouraged those who owned small farms to borrow funds -- and one family gladly took them up on their offer. But the good times have gone, and the financially strapped family is about to lose the land that their ancestors have farmed for generations. As their farm (like that of so many of their neighbors) approaches the auction block, the mother tries to hold her family together.
