Product Description:

Personnel: Connie Stevens (vocals); Robert Conrad, Poncie Ponce (vocals).
Director: Warren Barker.
The virtues of Hawaiian Eye -- the album -- are many. First, you have musical direction by Warren Barker, the Warner Bros. Orchestra guru with a penchant for exotica. Production is by Alvino Rey, the great steel guitar pioneer, bandleader, and guitarist for Esquivel. Connie Stevens (as "Cricket" in the show) sings "Let's Do It." Robert Conrad (as Tom Lopaka) sings "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me." And Poncie Ponce (as Kim) sings "When My Dream Boat Comes Home." These and the other tracks range from OK to great and are mostly in an exotic "cocktail" or torch vein. The vocal title theme will appeal to collectors of "crime jazz," as well as fans of Hawaiian music. Finally, the jacket art features a brilliant color photo of the principal cast gathered poolside with a giant prop tiki statue in the foreground. Hawaiian Eye is colorful, delightful (if somewhat kitschy), and above all, fun. ~ Tony Wilds

"The Soft Island Breeze Brings You Strange Melodies!" Warren Barker's percussive arrangements were a delicious part of Warner Brothers' TV program "Hawaiian Eye". In addition to the unforgettable (even if you really try) theme song by Jerry Livingston and Mack David, the four main characters of the show were each given a musical theme to underscore their scenes (all included on this recording). A favorite part of most episodes was Cricket Blake (Connie Stevens) performing a classic Warner tune onstage in the Shell Bar, the tropical watering hole at the Hawaiian Village Hotel where the detectives hung out. Ms. Steven's "Let's Do It" is the "ginchiest" (as Kookie would say) and even handsome Bob Conrad, best known for tough-guy James West on "The Wild, Wild West" series, manages a charming vocal on "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me." Master ukulele player Poncie Ponce is also heard here as Kim the cab driver strumming a happy rendition of "When My Dreamboat Comes Home." Instrumental stand-outs include the dizzying "Rhumba Rhapsody", jazzy "Cricket's Corner" and a hypnotic treatment of "Deep Night". This is a bright, bouncy album with a sparkling tropical flavor...and is thoroughly entertaining.
"Hawaiian Eye", broadcast from 1959 to 1963, was filmed in black & white which makes the vibrant color phototograph of the cast on the cover all the more wonderful.
