A festive evening of musical entertainment complete with soloists, musicians, dancing, and fireworks, this New Year's Eve celebration in Berlin was conducted by Daniel Barenboim, chief conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and musical director of the Staatsoper unter den Linden. Highlights of this sparkling occasion include lighthearted music by Nicolai, Mozart, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, Shsostakovich, Johann Strauss II, Kollo, and Lincke, performed by singers including Dorothea Roschmann and Simone Nold, dancers from the Staatsoper Ballet, fifteen-year-old violin virtuoso Raphael Christ, and the inimitable H.K. Gruber singing Kurt Weill's "Berlin im Licht."
