An economic boom is sweeping through 1870s Europe. Still, Melmotte (David Suchet) is being forced to leave Vienna due to yet another financial scandal in this scoundrel's long list of fiduciary disasters. Melmotte decides to stay, though, and stirs up trouble with people who despise all about him except his bankroll.
Suchet is devilishly delightful in this adaptation of Anthony Trollope's classic novel. This mini-series of corruption and deceit was adapted by Andrew Davies, who previously adapted PRIDE AND PREJUDICE for the A&E Network. Broadcast during a worldwide financial down slide, Trollope's cautionary tale of counting chickens before they hatch resonated strongly during its British broadcast.
