To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, Warner Home Video has re-released the 1987 British television version of Shaw's melodrama, THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE. During the American Revolution, Dick Dudgeon returns home to his father's funeral and declares himself "the Devil's disciple" to indicate his rejection of his mother's devout Christian values and her traditional and oppressive concepts of family. However, when the British come to hang the minister, Anthony Anderson, Dudgeon claims to be Anderson, sacrificing himself for the minister, and revealing that he cannot so easily shake his underlying values. Taking the classical form of melodrama as a model, Shaw uses the situation to poke holes in conventional notions of morality, and to show how different people respond in moments of trial. The film features Patrick Stewart as Anthony Anderson and Ian Richardson as the ironic and witty British general who uses style and flair to mask any need for moral action.
