Bloody Pit of Horror (1965, Color): This tale of torture and vengeance is based on the infamous writings of the Marquis de Sade. A group of photographers and models arrive at an Italian castle owned by a deranged ex-actor who is the reincarnation of the notorious medieval torturer, the Crimson Executioner. When he discovers that his ex-girlfriend is among the group, the enraged madman subjects them to his dungeon of torture. With scantily clad victims pleading for mercy as they face unendurable tortures, Bloody Pit of Horror is a titillating over-the-top European horror epic. Filmed in "Psychovision," it stars Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay as the Crimson Executioner whose "...vengeance requires blood!" The names in the credits of this Euro-trash classic have been anglecized to protect the guilty.
Horrors of Spider Island (1962, B&W): A team of chorus girls find themselves caught in a deadly web when they are shipwrecked on a remote South Seas island. The lush, tropical isle seems an ideal place to await their rescue, but hidden in the jungle are giant poisonous spiders. A venomous bite transforms the girls' escort into a disfigured beast, half-man and half-insect. Consumed with lust and craving blood, the monster hunts down the defenseless girls and slaughters them one by one. The ensuing panic drives the dancers to squabble and fight among themselves until they realize that their only hope for survival is to work together in a final stand against the monster. Originally released in West Germany with the title Ein Toter hing im Netz, this campy sexploitation film uses every trick in the book to sneak a peek at its heroines' nubile bodies.
Nightmare Castle (1962, B&W): Muriel and David are caught in an adulterous affair by her sadistic husband Stephen, who subjects the couple to horrific tortures in his laboratory. He viciously executes them, but they are far from being disposed of. The unholy lovers return from the grave to wreak horrifying revenge on the scheming doctor and Muriel's psychotic twin sister, Jenny. Originally released as Amanti d'Oltretomba, this incessantly gruesome film draws high praise from fright-fest connoisseurs.
BLOODY PIT OF HORROR: A group of models stumble into an apparently abandoned castle, looking for a suitably gothic setting for a photo shoot. They discover the old dungeon and they and their photographers begin setting up a series of macabre shots. Their presence alerts an unhinged actor who lives out his madness in the castle as self-proclaimed reincarnation of the Crimson Executioner. When he realizes one of the models is his former fiancee, he begins to execute a series of horrific tortures.
HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND: When a planeload of models crash-lands on a tropical island, they are forced by the heat and humidity to peel off most of their hot, sticky clothing. That evening they find a giant spider web with a dead scientist caught in it, but this doesn't stop their talent manager from taking a late-night walk. In great monster movie tradition, it's not long before he is bitten by a spider and begins to change into a hairy crab-like giant spider. And really, is there anything a giant spider creature on a desert island likes better than a planeload of models? Super schlock-o.
NIGHTMARE CASTLE: Barbara Steele has a dual role in this Italian production concerning a mad scientist who tortures his unfaithful wife and her lover to death only to have them return from the grave for revenge. Spaghetti western composer Ennio Morricone (THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY) scored this horror yarn.
