The limited-edition Blaa-Oh Blaa-Oh Blaa-Oh compiles both of the albums famed TV comedian Soupy Sales recorded for Reprise at the peak of his eponymous ABC children's show; mixing skits featuring characters like White Fang, Black Tooth, and Pookie with tongue-in-cheek pop songs produced by the likes of Neal Hefti and Jack Nitzsche, the set includes both 1961's The Soupy Sales Show and the following year's Up in the Air as well as three rare singles, but its value beyond pure nostalgia is highly debatable. While Sales' sons Tony and Hunt later collaborated with David Bowie on his Tin Machine project, even a cursory listen to Blaa-Oh reveals their musical talent isn't exactly genetic; the old man can barely carry a tune, but he gamely warbles his way through amusing if utterly forgettable songs like "Hippy's Cha Cha Hips" and "Pie in the Face," aided by Spike Jones-inspired arrangements and sound effects. (Although, for the record, "Soupy Sez" is actually pretty funny.) Rhino Handmade's packaging is typically excellent, reprinting the front and back covers of both original LPs as well as their attendant liner notes; if anything, the collection is almost too lavish for a project with such limited appeal. Baby boomers raised on the show will no doubt appreciate such a blast from the past, but for even the most ardent Soupy Sales fan, a little of this stuff goes a long way. ~ Jason Ankeny
