The Modern Jazz Quartet/Laurindo Almeida: John Lewis (piano); Milt Jackson (vibraharp); Percy Heath (bass instrument); Connie Kay (drums).
This 2009 issue by Gambit Records displays the front cover of the Modern Jazz Quartet's historic meeting with guitarist Laurindo Almeida, entitled Collaboration. What the CD contains, however, is not only this legendary Atlantic album, but the complete recordings of the MJQ from 1964. In addition to Collaboration, the album The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess is included, featuring music from three concert performances at Webster Hall in late 1964 that were recorded for radio broadcast. While there isn't anything here that hardcore fans haven't heard before, assembling two great albums for a very fine price point is always attractive. ~ Thom Jurek

Thanks to Collectables Records for this re-issue. Laurindo Almeida is understated and seems to take a back seat in the first three John Lewis compositions on this release. On the following adaptation of a Bach fugue he steps up. Both John Lewis and Mr. Almeida have a common interest in adapting classical pieces for jazz ensembles.
On the the subsequent Brazillian compositions Mr. Almeida steps out. His introduction to One Note Samba establishes this ensemble as a quintet.
The Concierto De Aranjuez again puts Mr. Lewis and Mr. Almeida in the framework of an extended "classical" composition and their adaptation is exceptional.
Also check out Mr. Almeida's work with Bud Shank and the LA 4 quartet featuring Ray Brown.
