Sympathetic and Successful Collaboration
Music Lover: James DeForest from Greenville, NY US -- July, 5, 2008
Thanks to Collectables Records for this re-issue. Laurindo Almeida is understated and seems to take a back seat in the first three John Lewis compositions on this release. On the following adaptation of a Bach fugue he steps up. Both John Lewis and Mr. Almeida have a common interest in adapting classical pieces for jazz ensembles. On the the subsequent Brazillian compositions Mr. Almeida steps out. His introduction to One Note Samba establishes this ensemble as a quintet. The Concierto De Aranjuez again puts Mr. Lewis and Mr. Almeida in the framework of an extended "classical" composition and their adaptation is exceptional. Also check out Mr. Almeida's work with Bud Shank and the LA 4 quartet featuring Ray Brown.
