Also released in 1973, TEXAS TORNADO is the second solo album that Tex-Mex legend Doug Sahm recorded for Atlantic Records following a long run with his inimitable band the Sir Douglas Quintet. Many of the tracks are taken from the same sessions that produced Sahm's previous solo album AND BAND, and while this record is tighter and doesn't swing with quite the same deliciously languid vibe as its predecessor, it's distinctive in that it contains almost all originals as opposed to the various covers and standards on AND BAND. With that said, it's nearly impossible to ever go wrong with a Doug Sahm project, and TEXAS TORNADO is no exception. Sahm's love of R&B, country, Tejano, and myriad other American roots forms ("Blue Horizon" even tosses in a bit of Fillmore West-style psychedelia) is on full display, as is his exceptional talent as a singer, player, and band leader.
