Description by OLDIES.com:
For sublime screen romance, look no further than this third Clark Gable/Lana Turner teaming. Even with no glamorous gowns in sight, Turner is at her appeaing best as a down-to-earth nurse who wins battle surgeon Gable's heart as they follow World War II across Africa and Europe. The problem is that Gable has a wonderful wife (Anne Baxter) waiting for him back home. Having entered the war as a self-centered society doctor, he finds himself humbled by the reality of war - and deeply, desperately in love with Turner. To its credit, the film paints no one as the heavy, only blaming the war for forever altering the lives of those who lived through it. This modern version of the Ulysses myth - a soldier, forever changed, returns home to his wife - says something genuine about American life through its tender tale of love and loss.
HOMECOMING pairs screen giants Clark Gable with Lana Turner in a war-torn romantic drama. Gable plays Dr. Ulysses Delby Johnson, a self-centered physician too busy with the ritzy New York social scene to help disease-ridden patients. But with the outbreak of war, the doctor is enlisted into the Medical Corps and shipped off to Africa. Turner plays a nurse, Lt. Jane McCall, nicknamed Snapshot for her fine looks. She takes an immediate disliking to Gable's shallow practitioner, and in the field they argue vociferously. But after she leaves, her low estimate of his character causes him to reflect and change for the better. When they meet again in Paris on leave, they fall in love--but with Gable's Johnson already wed, there's more than just a war on hand as an obstacle. Mervy LeRoy (30 SECONDS OVER TOKYO, RANDOM HARVEST) directs this tale of star-crossed love, based on Sidney Kingsley's story "The Homecoming of Ulysses."
Told in flashback, this wartime romance shows the personal growth of one man, ironically because of his extramarital affair. Gable, a self-centered doctor, enlists in World War II, leaving his wife and shallow existence at home. Lana Turner portrays the battlefield nurse whose love forever changes him. Together they live and love in a place that might destroy them.
- Beware: Spoiler!
Star Gable and producer Franklin fought over what should happen to Lana Turner's character. Gable felt the honest ending involved her death.
