"...DREAM firmly sets itself among some rather fascinating scientific notions..."
Description by OLDIES.com:
After a woman is attacked in her apartment, she begins reliving the traumatic event in her dreams night after night. She seeks help at a sleep disorder research center, with some unexpected, and horrific, results. This pulse-pounding psychological thriller stars Emmy Award-winner Kristy McNichol ("Only When I Laugh," TV's "Empty Nest"), Paul Shenar ("Scarface," "The Big Blue"), Ben Masters ("All the Jazz," "Making Mr. Right") and Jon Polito ("Flags of Our Fathers," "Miller's Crossing"). Directed by Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee Alan J. Pakula ("The Pelican Brief," "All the President's Men").
DREAM LOVER is a complicated scientific thriller, a tale that explores the unknown boundaries between the dream state and the waking state. Kathy Gardner (Kristy McNichol) is alone at home when she finds herself fighting for her life against an intruder that she fatally stabs in the back. After the event McNichol is tormented by a recurring dream of the incident. Were her actions a necessary act of self defense, or an act of subconscious fury, and can a dream-researcher help her unlock the truth behind what really happened that night' Or will her two worlds merge into one and her dreams/nightmares come true'
Kristy McNichol plays Kathy Gardner, a jazz flutist who has recently moved into New York City. Late one night she is attacked in her apartment by a would-be rapist whom she fatally stabs him in the back. Nightly revisited by a recurring dream of the incident, McNichol meets Michael Hansen (Ben Masters), a dream-researcher who promises to help her. McNichol's nightmarish evenings, however, only get worse. Masters claims that the actions in a dream state can be channeled into real but controlled actions, but his research isn't full-proof and he needs Kathy to step in as his guinea pig. The film explores the fascinating question that is posed when the dream state and the waking state are confused and intermingled. Bergman's longtime cinematographer Sven Nykvist provides a beautiful visual context to the scientific hypothesis.
- Theatrical Release: February 21, 1986.
