Description by

Kentucky-born Lionel Hampton was originally a drummer before becoming a famed vibraphone player and bandleader. During his seventy-plus year career, Hampton made more jazz recordings than any other single instrumentalist. These two Columbia albums, originally released in 1958 and 1960, showcase Hampton's sensitive and soft sides. Among the romantic tunes given wonderfully melodic interpretations are "What's New," "Round Midnight," and "The More I See You." This favorite is one of our must-have jazz reissues.

Product Description:

2 LPs on 1 CD: GOLDEN VIBES (1959)/SILVER VIBES (1960).
Personnel: Lionel Hampton (vibraphone); Richard Hixon, Edward Bert, Robert McGarity, Robert Byrne (trombone); Tommy Flanagan (piano); John Mackel, Clifton Best (guitar); Osie Johnson, Elvin Jones (drums).
Originally released on Columbia (8110) & Columbia (8277).
The combination of these Lionel Hampton albums -- Golden Vibes and Silver Vibes -- provide pleasant interpretations of pop standards. The familiar melodies of "Day by Day," "My Funny Valentine," and "What's New?" hold up exceptionally well. The original LPs were released on Columbia in 1958 and 1960, and had been out of print until Collectables reissued them in 2001. ~ Al Campbell

I suppose that at the time this was recorded, Hamp thought he was doing shrewd business. It is of course not bad (with rythm section, plus either the trombone section or the sax section of his current big band), but according to his own standard, Lionel recorded plenty of better records.
