Spanish-born Xavier Cugat, also known as "Cugie," was a world-renowned musician, artist, and bon vivant who is considered one of the pioneers of Latin-American dance music. His band was the house band at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel for 16 years, and many Americans got their first taste of Latin music through Cugat. Among the rhythmic gems on this CD are "Begin The Beguine," "La Paloma," and "Mambo at the Waldorf."

This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out-of-print Xavier Cugat LP's: Cugat's Favorite Rumbas and Mambo at the Waldorf. Each of the 24 tracks has a continuity dominated by Cha Cha rhythms. While this material becomes formulaic, it's still a lot of fun and perfect background music for your next party. Highlights Include "Mambo Gordo," "Besame Mucho," "Begin the Beguine," and "Mambo at the Waldorf." ~ Al Campbell
