Product Description:

Recording information: 1928-1936.
This fascinating double CD collection of 20th century novelty songs that became popular between the two world wars is also a glimpse of the aftermath of the demise of the British music hall. Songs such as Charles Penrose's "The Laughing Policeman" (actually a reworking of the black American vaudeville performer George W. Johnson's "Laughing Song") and Ambrose and His Orchestra's "The Pig Got Up and Slowly Walked Away" were tailor-made for mass singalongs, though instead of being performed live, during the 1920s and '30s they were presented to their audience via radio or on record. Though some songs here, such as "I Lift Up My Finger and I Say 'Tweet Tweet'" and "Thick Fog in London," are clearly from another era, others, like Randolph Sutton's racy "You Ought to Know Better, a Big Girl Like You," carry more of an eternal message.
