Bandleader Bob Crosby will probably be best remembered for his back-to-Dixieland repertoire of the late '30s and early '40s. And adding to the somewhat kitschy mix, Crosby also went in for many novelty cuts like "A Gay Ranchero" and "Chick-Ee-Chick." Thankfully, one can check out Crosby's work via cherry-picked collections on Decca and BBC and forgo trudging through all the mess. This Halcyon disc, though, is part of a chronological series that offers it all, blemishes included. So, even though there are some song highlights here like "Royal Garden Blues" and fine contributions by Judy Garland, trumpeter Yank Lawson, and clarinetist Eddie Miller, You Can Call It Swing is best left for completists ready to tolerate the filler. ~ Stephen Cook
